Northern Red Oak

Quercus Rubra

Description:

This tree forms a lovely canopy over the frong lawn of Admissions. Although the leaves have begun to brown a bit, it's a beautiful start to your tour of Phillips Academy!

Habitat:

Outside of the Shuman Admission Center at Phillips Academy in Andover.

Notes:

The Northern Red Oak is very common in North America. Used as timber or firewood. The bark of the tree distinguishes it from others due to the long, dark ridges that travel down the trunk. The leaves often turn a beautful bright red in the fall. The Northern Red Oak is the state Tree of New Jersey.
