Barn Spider

Araneus cavaticus

Description:

Your typical big hairy spider that makes orb webs in the eaves of houses and barns. This particular spider was found in a barn. It had been overcome by a fungus which is apparent on the abdomen. Looks like penicillium to me but I don't know for sure.

Habitat:

Eaves of barns and houses in the Autumn.

Notes:

This was a unique spotting for me. I have never seen a spider overcome by mold and I find it very interesting.
