Dark Blue Pansy

Junonia oenone

Description:

Junonia oenone is Nymphalid butterfly native to Africa. It is known as the Blue Pansy in southern Africa; however, the name Blue Pansy is used in India to describe Junonia orithya, and the name Dark Blue Pansy may be used to distinguish Junonia oenone.

Habitat:

This butterfly would land on the ground 3 or 4 meters in front of me, and just when I got close enough to take a photo, it would fly on another few meters! This went on for ages. Seen on a dirt road with forest on either side.

Notes:

Kibale National Park (pronounced Chibale) is a national park in South Uganda protecting moist evergreen rain forest. It is 766 km² in size and is located between 1,100–1,600 meters in elevation.. The northern part of the park has the highest elevation. Kibale is one of the last remaining expanses to contain both lowland and montane forests. In East Africa, it sustains the last significant expanse of pre-montane forest.
