Steve, the Oleander Hawkmoth is found mainly in Africa and Asia whereas the Sphinx Moth Latimeria suggested is found in North America. They both look pretty similar and are part of the Sphingidae family of moths!

I can definitely see why, I double-checked myself to make sure. The only reason I knew what this one was is because I found one myself last summer. It's fascinating how similar these two are, even though they're separated by an ocean!

Latimeria, thanks. You are indeed correct. Living in the UK I thought of the Oleander Hawk Moth given the similarity in colouration and pattern.

It looks similar to an Oleander Hawk Moth, and they're in the same family (Sphingidae), but the Oleander Hawk Moth is native to Europe and Asia. This one is the Pandora Sphinx moth. They're similar, but have different color patterns.
