Gorilla beringei beringei
Adult males are called silverbacks because a saddle of gray or silver-colored hair develops on their backs with age. The hair on their backs is shorter than on most other body parts, and their arm hair is especially long. Fully erect, males reach 1.9 m (6 ft 3 in) in height, with an arm span of 2.3 m (7 ft 7 in) and weigh 220 kg (490 lb).
rainforested mountains
This silverback is just one of a family of 20 mountain gorillas I saw while trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.

I like the fourth photo- it shows all the majestic, powerful and expressive gestures they are able to show... but yeah, even the first shot is really amazing- profound and beautiful.

That first shot is absolutely amazing. I had to stare at it for a moment or two to figure out what I was looking at, but then...seriously wow. I can't even begin to explain how much I love it. Thanks for sharing this with us, Dan.
