Cuckoo Wasp

Description:

Brilliant green and dark blue metallic Cuckoo Wasp, only about 8 mm long. It was busy around a flowering bush near a restaurant in the hot arid Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, Mexico. I refrigerated the wasp briefly in order to take this picture. Family Chrysididae. These wasps are usually brilliantly metallic and sparkling. Most are parasitoid or kleptoparasitic wasps, putting their eggs in other wasp's nests.
