Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel

Callospermophilus lateralis

Description:

Resembling a Chipmunk these are actually ground squirrels and have no facial stripes, which is the best way to tell them apart. They are about the same size and has bold stripes on back. Able to fill there cheeks with food.

Habitat:

Unlike Chipmunks these burrow into the ground. These are mostly found in higher elevations. This one and some others I found were found in a campground of mixed conifer trees.
