Pied-billed Grebe

Podilymbus podiceps

Notes:

This bird was found in the middle of a busy Chicago street. It had apparently crash landed and then been attacked by something. Apparently Grebes can't get airborne from the ground, and he crashed quite far away from the nearest large body of water. A couple of people on the street helped me rescue it (which is why the only pictures I have of him are of me holding him wrapped in a blanket) and get it to the Willowbrook Wildlife Center for medical care and rehab. Last time I talked to them he was eating on his own and doing well and they were getting him ready for re-release. The whole story is on my blog here: http://shootingdownthemiddleoftheroad.bl... and here http://shootingdownthemiddleoftheroad.bl... The second shot is from Willowbrook, after he'd been treated.

Emma, the Brookfield Zoo used to have Hummingbirds? They don't anymore! I wish I'd seen them. Getting the grebe to the right people was a bit of a Capital-A Adventure, but it was great to see him get to a vet and get treatment. They treat over 8000 animals A YEAR out there! What a phenomenal place!

good to know he is getting better.
I stay in San Fransisco now. Was in Chicago, Downers grove, for 20. Here we have the Lindsay museum of wildlife where we can take in injured animals. It can be an intensely emotional experience. Having the Museum of wildlife takes away some of the helplessness I would have felt in not knowing what to do with an animal in distress.
one of the biggest joys of relocating here was to see a humming bird . I literally jumped up and down !
I remember going to The Brooke-field Zoo to see the Hummingbirds.
