Small Cabbage White butterfly on Cabbage Plants

Pieris rapae

Description:

I spotted a Small Cabbage White butterfly feeding on cabbage plants (Photo 1 of 2) during a photowalk through the Children’s Garden at Hollin Meadows Science and Math Focus School. This individual is a female, as indicated by two black spots on the center of its forewings (males have one black spot on their forewings). On 10 June 2011, I photographed a cluster of 43 Small Cabbage White butterfly eggs on the underside of a cabbage plant leaf. (Yes, I counted them.) In Photo 2 of 2, see the small yellow circular area located just above the center of the photo.
