Common Evening Brown

Melanitis leda

Description:

Fairly large with a wingspan around 60mm. This is the dry season form of this butterfly, with reduced 'eye-spots' on the underside of the wings and a falcate forewing apex. These butterflies belong to the subfamily satyrinae of Nymphalidae and they feed on rotten fruits rather than flower nectar. They also prefer shady habitats. These butterflies get attracted to my home garden during the season of Jackfruit, Artocarpus heterophyllus, where they feed on ripened or fallen jackfruit.

Habitat:

Spotted at my home, suburban residential area.

Notes:

I don't know why satyrinae butterflies creep into houses at night?
