Great St-John's wort

Hypericum calycinum

Description:

The great St-John's wort is a widely cultivated low-growing shrub with large solitary yellow flowers.

Habitat:

Grows in Mediterranean climates. This one was spotted in the rockery of a nearby garden.

Notes:

Hypericum calycinum can produce the medicinally active components of Hypericum perforatum (hyperforin, etc), which have been shown to be active in the treatment of mild depression.
