Laughing Kookaburra

Dacelo novaeguineae

Description:

This big-headed bird is related to the kingfisher and is known for its distinctive laughing sound. The bird pictured looked for an opportune moment to sweep anchovies from the food spread on our picnic rug. Determined, it was not at all intimidated by us or the noises we were making to shoo it away.
