Buffalo Bean

Mucuna pruriens

Description:

This is a tropical legume native to Africa and tropical Asia and widely naturalized and cultivated. Its English common names include velvet bean, Bengal velvet bean, Florida velvet bean, Mauritius velvet bean, Yokohama velvet bean, cowage, cowitch, lacuna bean, and Lyon bean. The plant is notorious for the extreme itchiness it produces on contact,[ particularly with the young foliage and the seed pods. It has agricultural and horticultural value and is used in herbalism.

Habitat:

Found growing near a hut in Mwamba Bush Camp based in South Luangwa National Park. The camp is built from scratch each year and the thoughts are that this 'vine' infiltrated the materials brought from the local village of Mfuwe and has started to flourish

Notes:

In Africa this is referred to as one of the ’GREEN FIVE’ (Rhino Thistle; Buffalo Bean; Lion’s Tail; Leopard Orchid and Elephant Grass) Can anyone suggest a mission for this please?
