Hylephila phyleus
Tan, orange and black butterfly with a few dots on outer wings. Inside is orange with black markings.
Backyard on unknown leaf, Mexican Bush Sage, Creeping Lantana and Sea Lavender flowers. The last three images are of a dying butterfly :(

I updated this spotting. Unfortunately I found the little butterfly dead near the flowers this morning. Its wings were open so I took a photo (first one). Hopefully it will help with the ID.
No worries, I made the same mistake with a skipper - they look very moth-like! :)
You're definitely right Elsa! Thank you. I should have looked at my other spottings first as I have a different skipper already posted :)
It should be easier to ID this now that I know what I'm looking for!
