Mourning Dove

Zenaida macroura

Description:

Gray to buff colored upper body, lighter gray lower body. Black markings on both sides of the neck. They have a variety of calls, all of which have a very melancholy sound to them. This may have something to do with the first part of their common name. One exception to this observation is the call they give when startled and breaking into flight.

Habitat:

Open areas with trees and shrubs

Notes:

This particular family was photographed on the trails contained on the grounds of the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum. While there are captive animals as part of the museums educational collection, there are also free ranging animals on the grounds to further educate the public. This adult dove was not at all disturbed by our proximity even though we were within arms length of her and the chicks.
