Von Hohnel's Chameleon

Chameleo hoehnelii

Description:

small blunt horn-like hump on nose, large raised helmet-like casque. prehensile tail almost half its body length

Habitat:

slopes of Mount Elgon, only known location for this largely Kenyan species

Notes:

I spotted this while camping at Sipi Falls for 3 days after trekking to the peak of Mount Elgon. I asked locals to help me find chameleons. I saw several different individuals but after closer examination, many of them appear to be the same species. Identified with my newly aquired Field Guide to East African Reptiles, an amazing book and the only definitive guide to reptiles in the region.
