ScottRasmussen, I definitely saw the resemblance in your link with the leaves, but I never did see any of the growth from your link. However it is the most closely related species so far. Thank you for the ID! And thanks Emma as well! :)
It's an aspen or cottonwood, genus Populus, but I'm not sure what grows in CA besides P. tremuloides, Quaking Aspen. The leaves seem too triangular for Quaking Aspen, Fremont Cottonwood maybe? http://www.calflora.org/cgi-bin/species_...

The link in that spotting also refers to Fremont Cottonwood, but the tree in those pictures is a Western Redbud.

The leaves are nearly heart shaped.
Could this be a black cottonwood tree?
