Hummingbird Clearwing

Hemaris thysbe

Description:

Hummingbird Clearwing Moth caterpillar. About 22mm in length.

Habitat:

Reared in captivity from egg taken from Viburnum bush in an urban garden.

Notes:

After photographing a Hummingbird Clearwing Moth feeding at Butterfly Bush (Buddleia sp.) I watched as it flew to a nearby Viburnum bush and deposited a single egg. I brought the egg inside and it hatched in 3 days and, I believe, molted twice within the next 7. The day after this photo was taken it molted again.
