Description:

This is probably the most common and widespread butterfly in Europe (hence the third spotting of mine). Beautiful medium-large (45-50 mm wingspan) butterfly with red, white and black patterns on the upper and underside of the wings. The hindwings are mottled dark brown and black on the underside.
