Green-Spored Parasol

Chlorophyllum molybdites

Description:

Spotted these mushrooms in the grass of a shopping center parking lot in San Marcos, CA.

Habitat:

shopping center landscape lawn.

Notes:

Growing on grass in an arid region, distinct scaly to uplifted warts concentrated near the center of the cap, the stem that discolors to reddish hues (usually with a ring as well), and the absence of a volva all are features of the Green-spored Parasol. These are not exactly young, but not quite mature yet as they have not opened outwards (they still look like little whitish eggs on a stick). Poisonous -- to small children, these can be fatal.

I know what it's like to recieve help on my finds, and it makes me so happy to be able to do so in return.

All signs point to Chlorophyllum molybdites (sometimes referred to as Lepiota molybdites). Compare to my spotting here in Arizona: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/739....

Aside from that dark fact, the ones you've found are quite lovely. :)
