Hairy Woodpecker
Mixed boreal forest, this area is a primarily an old birch forest, lots of post mature trees.
@raulalsc,what you have is an "Acorn wood pecker" and what Bill has is a "Hairy Wood Pecker". They are different species and hence you may not be able to use the same criteria for differentiating between male and female!
This bird looks a little like a Downy's woodpecker.very cute.
How is it different in a male?
