A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Aramus guarauna
The Limpkin is about 28 inches tall. It is brown with white spots and streaks. My reaction when I caught sight of it was "What is that?!" There was no way I was going to get close enough for a good look. No one else around knew what it was either. My poor camera is on its highest zoom.
Swamps and marshes. Spotted near a freshwater lake.
The Limpkin is protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. http://www.fws.gov/migratorybirds/Regula... http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Limpk...

It is very surprising how well his camouflage was working. When I first asked others about the bird and pointed, they said "What bird?" They had been there the whole time I was taking pictures. So, I showed it to them. Perhaps they thought I was just doing landscapes.
Nice spotting!
