Paper wasps

Polistes gallicus

Description:

The nest these wasps are swarming over is the biggest one I ever seen so far. Hiding in a dead plant, it was approximately 15cm long by 10cm wide.

Notes:

A sheer stroke of luck meant I did not get badly stung - I was cutting this plant out and didn't notice the nest (well camouflaged). I lifted the plant up by the left hand side, the wasps started to fly out and I ran away - the nest was on the right had side, less than 30cm/1 ft away!!
