Unnamed spotting

Description:

We found the cut surface of a log in our backyard. It was a little more than an inch high, and as you can see in photo #2, there is a slime trail around it. We have absolutely no idea what this is. Any help would be appreciated!

Habitat:

Urban/suburban backyard in Long Island, NY (outside of Manhattan)

Thanks so much, Kristal and everyone. That link you sent was wonderful--I would have liked to have seen it in that delicately balanced state.

I found the wikipedia entry for slime mold (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slime_mold) and the first photo looked like what you have. Could be a different species, as I really don't know slime mold classification, but it looks close.

Wow, thanks--yes, it does look like that! I suspected some sort of fungus, but the slime trails make it confusing. How did you find that other similar listing?
