Red-breasted Sapsucker

Sphyrapicus ruber

Description:

I visited my niece's house in Beaver Creek, Or., and was lucky to spot this pretty bird in her back yard. Noticing his repeated behavior of returning to this particular tree several times, made it relatively easy to get this photo.

Habitat:

Diverse forest types but prefers coniferous trees, anywhere from sea level to mountainous regions on the west coast of North America. By "coast" I mean west of the Cascades.

Notes:

I do not know the species of tree but numerous holes in the tree bark can be seen in the photo.
