Western Tiger Swallowtail

Papilio rutulus

Description:

I spotted this gorgeous Western Tiger Swallowtail in an office building courtyard garden in Emeryville, CA. I chased it all over the garden and managed to get these shots. It flew so fast! It is a common swallowtail butterfly of western North America and is considered an "active" butterfly, rarely seed at rest--I agree.

Habitat:

Urban office building courtyard garden.
