Description:

The green pine needles give the twisted branches a bottle-brush appearance. The name bristlecone pine refers to the dark purple female cones that bear incurved prickles on their surface.

Habitat:

High elevation, just below the tree line.

Cool. Bristlecone pines are the oldest living organisms. Were the specimens in your spotting protected in any way, say within a park or conservation area?
