Great White Pelicans and Lesser Flamingoes

Pelecanus onocrotalus / Phoenicopterus minor

Description:

A social and cooperative bird, the great white pelican fishes in the early morning, spending the remainder of the day preening and bathing. Flamingo -This species feeds primarily on Spirulina, algae which grow only in very alkaline lakes. Although blue-green in colour, the algae contain the photosynthetic pigments that give the birds their pink colour. Their deep bill is specialised for filtering tiny food items. The lesser flamingo also feeds on shrimp.

Habitat:

Alkaline lakes of E. Africa

Notes:

I spotted a lot of these birds while on safari in Lake Nakuru national park.
