Phragmites/Common Reed

Phragmites

Description:

The invasive type is taking over the shoreline around the bay.The invasive type has a rough stem and the native has a smoother stem. I beleive these are the invasive type pictured. They grow 12' in one season. Roots are 2" thick in some areas and span 15' in length. These cannot be cut as a new plant will sprout from cuttings. However can be controlled by chemical sprays and planned controlled burns.

Habitat:

Marshy
