The Common nighthawk is in the Nightjar family (Caprimulgidae). They have a flattened head with large eyes. Their plumage consists of intricate patterns of gray, brown, black, and white specs.

Habitat:

Spotted on a farm fence post near the Anahuac NWR in southeastern Texas.
