empty nest

Description:

Bird's nest constructed of mud, twigs, grass and other leaves, and some stringy bits of plastic. Approx. 6 inches in diameter. Found on a low box elder tree branch on the edge of a wooded area. No signs of recent use. Has probably been there most of the year without me noticing, and is just now visible due to leaves falling off of the box elder tree.

Habitat:

Wooded area on the periphery of Penn State campus, near community garden and Center for Sustainability.

Please consider putting this spotting in the animal architecture mission at http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/8082.... Put any other animal architecture photos you have there too.

There's a cool new book out called Avian Architecture by Goodfellow about how birds build their various nests.
