Found throughout most of North America ... common to abundant in southern NA ... found on cultivated land, lawns and gardens. (BugGuide)

Notes:

In order to pupate, larvae burrow underground (5-15 cm into the soil); developing larvae also retreat into the soil during the day, and come out at night to feed. (BugGuide)
