Phasianus colchicus
Buff-brown with dark angular spots and feather centres. Rather nondescript, but long tail identifies it as a pheasant.
Introduced in Europe (in Britain probably 11th/12th century); wild populations occur East Black Sea and in Caucasus, eastwards towards China. Breeds in farmland areas with cover such as copses with dense undergrowth, scrubby thickets, conifer plantations, also in large gardens and parks. Nests on ground.
Spotted in the Trough of Bowland valley.
