Tobacco hornworm pupae & caterpillar

Description:

called horn worm because of conspicuous horn or spine on the top of the last abdominal segment which is reddish on this tobacco hornworm and black on the similar tomato hornworm; 7 white diagonal stripes on worm; 5 pairs of prolegs; pupae reddish brown & about 2.5 inches long;

Habitat:

urban school tomato garden bed; catepillar found on the tomato plants then 2 weeks later the pupae was found buried in the soil

name Manduca, which is the Latin word for "glutton" and they eat a lot
