King Swallowtail

Papilio thoas

Description:

Big butterfly. Has black wings with a yellow band straight across the back, yellow dots to the fore of the band, and a the end of the wings is lined with a band of yellow dots. The swallowtail itself is highlighted with yellow, too. Below the main yellow band across the wings, the trailing line of yellow dots has four small spots on that section of the wing - marking it as the King Swallowtail, as opposed to three small dots that would mark this the Giant Swallowtail.

Habitat:

A small butterfly preserve in the Botanical Garden of Medellin. The air is warm, but too high in altitude to feel tropical.
