Dogday harvestfly

Tibicen canicularis

Description:

The dogday harvestfly is black with green markings. Wings are clear green along their rear. Adult is not known to eat. The nymph feeds on root juices, especially pine and takes 3 years before maturing. A new generation hatches each summer in the same area. They are seen during the hot, dog days, of summer--that is where their name comes from. Their sound is a powerful call that sounds like a circular saw cutting through a board.

Habitat:

They are found in mixed woods in Northeastern United States and adjacent Canada. This cicada was spotted in the backyard.
