Eastern bluebird

Sialia sialis

Description:

The Eastern Bluebird is a small thrush found in open woodlands, farmlands and orchards, and most recently can be spotted in suburban areas. Adult males are bright blue on top and have a reddish brown throat and breast. Adult females have lighter blue wings and tail, a brownish throat and breast and a grey crown and back. The bright blue breeding plumage of the male, easily observed on a wire or open perch, fluttering down to the mowed grass to capture a grasshopper, cricket or beetle makes this species a favorite of birders.

Habitat:

Eastern Bluebirds are found east of the Rockies, southern Canada to the Gulf States and southeastern Arizona to Nicaragua.

Notes:

We have loads of these little guys in our garden!

Thanks Emma! We have had dozens of these guys hanging around recently. We planted over 60 trees this year & although many of them are only 4 or 5 feet tall, most evenings we have seen a bluebird perched at the top of almost every one! We only put up one box for them in the spring & it was occupied in less than 2 hours so we have now created a small bluebird trail of 6 boxes & fingers crossed we will have even more around next year! They are already roosting in all the new boxes at night so I'm feeling optimistic!
