Isabelline Shrike

Lanius isabellinus

Description:

At first I thought this one was a long tailed shrike, on comparing with the books that I have I found this one to be different. Got it identified as Isabelline Shrike from birdforum.net. Three races of Lanius isabellinus exist. Not sure exactly what sub species this one belongs to. This migratory medium-sized passerine eats large insects, small birds, rodents and lizards. Like other shrikes it hunts from prominent perches, and impales corpses on thorns or barbed wire as a larder. It breeds in open cultivated country, preferably with thorn bushes. The plumage is isabelline, the sandy colour which gives rise to its name.

Habitat:

Seen at the Little rann of kutch in the wild ass sanctuary.
