Nuthatches like to feed in odd ways..often upside down if possible. That is often a defining characteristic for them. They are a beautiful species and fun to watch at the feeder. Great shots! Beautiful cardinal as well.

I agree, at first glance I thought the second picture looked like a nuthatch as well.

That is a white-breasted nuthatch in the second photo
