Least Bittern

Ixobrychus exilis

Description:

Small heron species, even smaller then the Green Heron. Color is more orange/brown with a dark crown and striped neck. In flight you can see the white patches on the edge of the shoulder and the white stripe where the wing meets the body.

Habitat:

Elusive bird that hides in the tall reeds.

Notes:

At this time of the year the immature birds come out of hiding and fly in the open. This year I counted 6 birds flying and hiding in the ponds. From the last time I was here and first saw them, I forget how tiny they are.
