Nymphalis antiopa
This is a spiny black caterpillar with red spots.
This caterpillar was climbing a wall.
These caterpillars become visible in large numbers a few times a year as they climb walls to look for places to make a chrysalis.

The similarity is eerie between the Edith checkerspot butterfly and the mourning cloak butterfly. What is fascinating is the fact ,similar looking caterpillars, but the butterflies that emerge are totally different.
Nice picture!
