Hellgrammite

Corydalus cornutus

Description:

The aquatic larva of the Dobsonfly. The white, fluffy, pom-pons between segments are gills. These larvae can reach 3 inches in length and are prized by bass fishermen as a superb bait-arthropod.

Habitat:

This larva is an indicator species, found in swiftly moving, pristine water.

Notes:

These larvae were captured using a kick-net in 6-12 inches of water. Eggs are laid by Dobsonflies on the underside of leaves, overhanging the water. The eggs hatch and larvae drop into the water where they feed as voracious predators.
