Harlequin Crab

Lissocarcinus laevis

Description:

Also known as Harlequin Anemone Crab. They feed on plankton, and grow to a length of about 3cm.

Habitat:

Found on coral and rocky reefs usually associated with sea anemones and tube anemones. Widespread in the Indo-Pacific region.

Notes:

I photographed this critter at a depth of 51 feet. It was camping out under a Hell's Fire Sea Anemone (http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/795...), and when I came close it got pretty feisty. There were a couple of squat shrimp (http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/792...) keeping it company.

@Nicholas4 -- I don't believe it's mimicking a clownfish. The colors may be similar, but the pattern's definitely different. :)
