The distinctive ruddy shelduck has a beautiful orange-brown body plumage and a paler head. The male (shown here) has a black neck ring. A rare spotting for central Europe, this species normally winters further south and east.
An open pond with reeds and dense vegetation, the shores of which are frozen at this time (shown on the last shot at http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/849...)
The last Swiss census for this bird recorded only 15-25 breeding pairs. Previous summer spotting of this duck and his mate can be seen at http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/689... and http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/619...
