Looks like a cicada. It measures about 1" from head to wing tip. located next to a light pole at night

Habitat:

Tropical dry forest in NW Costa Rica 7 weeks into the 6 month dry season.

This was more than interesting Mr. Martini! thank you so much for the links and info. I did some basic searches and could not find any other species that closely resembled this one. However, along with a link bayucca sent, I emailed a hopper specialist in Brazil to see if she could help with some I.D.'s. Once again THANK YOU!

Ig, I suggest this is a plant hopper, similar to cicadas but different. Here are three technical differences. Plant hoppers and leafhoppers have antennae organs UNDER their eyes seen in your spotting and both species here http://www.brisbaneinsects.com/brisbane_...

Secondly, planthoppers have arboreal nymphs (see also the antennae) http://www.brisbaneinsects.com/brisbane_... while cicadas have subterranean nymphs. Thirdly cicadas have three central extra eyes as you can easily see in any close cicada shot. I hope this is interesting for you.
These are very complex and require good macro and references but as we all love learning, its worth the effort.
