ant lion larva make these pits and when ants or other small insects happen to stumble over thee edge the larva kicks up sand to make the ant lose footing. Kind of like one of the creatures out of star wars

I have always loved these. As a kid I once used a sifter and dug one up to see what it looked like. Very very sci-fi looking critter. Then I let him go to watch him redig his pit
