Plethodon dorsalis
3" long blue colored salamander found under a rock close to a lake.
Long Hunter State Park, Tennessee.
Similar in appearance but larger & more strongly blue colored than the other salamanders we found today http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/903...

Thanks again Lisa, I appreciate your help - I've never 'met' a salamander before a couple of weeks ago so they are very new to me! Hopefully we will find some of the more colorful ones on our travels!
Ambystomatids have fatter bodies, much larger heads and the legs are chunkier.
Same species, larger adult. Zigzag Salamander (Plethodon dorsalis) lead phase.
I've updated with my best guess at ID based on appearance & geographic spread.
Thanks for the advice Sarah! I will search on those species.
Check out the Ambystoma family of salamanders (more commonly known as mole salamanders).. It looks to me like either a blue-spotted or a jeffersonianum..
GREAT photo :)
Thank you Achmmad!
Absolutely beautiful Karen! Congrats :)
