Purple sea urchin. Erizo violáceo

Sphaerechinus granularis

Description:

S. granularis is a large sea urchin, somewhat flattened dorsally and growing to fifteen centimetres in diameter. There are two distinct colour forms. The test is purple in both but one has purple spines and the other white. The spines are short and blunt, all the same length, and arranged neatly in rows.--------------------------------------------- S. granularis es un erizo de mar grande, que llega a medir 15 cm de diámetro. Las púas son largas y macizas, de hasta 2 cm, de color violáceo también, con puntas redondeadas, de color blanco. En algunos ejemplares, toda la púa es blanca.

Habitat:

Fondos rocosos mediterráneos con abundantes praderas de posidonia.

Notes:

They use seaweeds (Posidonia in this case) to protect themselves from the sun. -------------------- Se cubre de algas (en el caso de la foto con Posidonia) para protegerse del intenso sol.
