Pigeon Tremex

Tremex columba

Description:

Red and black wasp, about 1 inch long. Found clinging to dead buckthorn, on chily, windy morning. When I poked it, it would lift it's wings, and curl its abdomen up.

Habitat:

Deciduous forest adjacent to tall grass prairie.
