White rhinoceros/Square-lipped rhinoceros

Ceratotherium simum

Description:

Its ears can move independently to pick up sounds but it depends most of all on smell. The olfactory passages which are responsible for smell are larger than their entire brain. The white rhinoceros has the widest set nostrils of any land based animal.

Habitat:

Grassland and savannah.

Notes:

We came across this group of 7 rhinos - 3 females, each with a baby and 1 big male (see 2nd pic). The male was trying to get to the females but because they had their young they wouldn't allow him to get too close. They both had some small wounds on them from when he pushed the boundries!
